Beginning Your Journey

Creating a Sacred Space for Your Tarot Practice

Hello, dear readers, and welcome to a new post.

One of the most fundamental things you can do for yourself is create a personal space within your home—or outside, if you are blessed with good weather. A wee sanctuary where you can meditate, read, contemplate, and journal can be a beautiful foundation for anyone beginning a healing journey through tarot.

In this article, I will share some practical advice on creating a little nook in your home for your daily practice. If you live in shared accommodation and having a designated space is not practical, you could use a box or small suitcase, such as the one shown in the photographs, to keep your private mementoes. You can then sit cross-legged on the floor or on your bed. This little suitcase or box becomes a focal point, and simply getting up each day to sit in your designated corner—or opening your case—can become a precious self-care ritual. Over time, as your practice expands, you may be amazed by the results.

How to Create a Sacred Tarot Space at Home

Do not forget to cleanse your space with sage or palo santo regularly, keeping the windows open. Once a week is usually enough, unless you sense that the energy feels particularly dense or heavy. Then, a little cleansing may help refresh the atmosphere.

You do not need to own a tarot deck to start—just a notebook and a pen. Incense and soft music can help set the scene. You can open the daily message on your phone or laptop, then relax as you note down your impressions and feelings in your journal. If you are wondering how to begin a tarot practice, start with a few quiet minutes and one honest question rather than trying to learn everything at once.

You may wish to add to this practice by drawing a card from your own tarot or oracle deck. Do not be surprised if the same card appears. This is what Carl Jung called synchronicity, and if it happens, it may suggest that you are resonating with the same energetic frequency as the message. Make a note of it in your journal. If it does not happen, do not worry. You may still find resonance in the message when the time is right.

Tarot Meditation, Grounding, and Breathwork

Next, with the tarot image and message in mind, gently close your eyes. Start with a couple of gentle neck rolls, relaxing the muscles as you slowly move your head from side to side. Then add a few shoulder shrugs, which may help alleviate stiffness in your neck and shoulders.

If you tend to suffer from anxiety, you may find comfort in holding a grounding crystal such as black tourmaline, tiger’s eye, or obsidian. In many spiritual traditions, these crystals are associated with grounding and protection, so it can be comforting to carry one in your pocket or handbag. Likewise, clear quartz is often regarded as a crystal that supports cleansing and energetic balance.

Remember to cleanse and charge your crystals regularly. There are many ways to do this, so explore and find a method that resonates with you. Salt and sunlight are among the easiest methods. Once your crystal has been purified, charge it with your intention before using it.

See if you can manage just five minutes of consciously focusing on your breath. With regular practice, you can gradually increase this to ten minutes and, ultimately, around twenty minutes. Counting your breaths is a wonderful way to quieten the constant chatter of the mind.

Tarot Journaling and Setting a Daily Intention

You can set an alarm and, before you begin your day, write an intention for the day ahead in your journal. An intention should be simple and ideally expressed in a single sentence. For example:

Today I choose to set firm boundaries and recognise my worth.

Close your practice by giving thanks to the Universe. Even if you feel there is nothing to be grateful for, many spiritual traditions teach that gratitude gently shifts our focus towards what is already present, allowing us to recognise more moments of hope, beauty, and possibility. By opening our hearts in appreciation, we naturally cultivate a more hopeful and expansive mindset.

If we understand that, from a universal perspective, everything consists of energy and vibration, we may begin to feel less isolated in our struggles. Whether you see this as a spiritual truth or simply a helpful way of viewing life’s challenges, there is great comfort in remembering that difficult seasons are temporary. Remember: it is only in fire that something can be forged. No matter how raw you feel right now, or how bleak life may seem, you will make it through. All it takes is one conscious step.

Nurturing Yourself Throughout the Day

Eating wholesome food, drinking plenty of water, and getting adequate rest will support your journey further. Health is wealth. A healthy body nurtures a healthy mind, and a healthy mind nourishes a healthy spirit.

In the evening, before going to sleep, try to refrain from doomscrolling where possible. Much of the content we consume on our phones is designed to stimulate emotion and encourage engagement, and this constant stimulation is one reason so many of us feel exhausted and overwhelmed.

Try limiting your screen time for at least forty-five minutes before bed. Doing so may improve the quality of your sleep and reduce restless nights.

Before you drift off, revisit your journal and give your subconscious a gentle prompt, such as:

I am safe. I am loved. I am protected.

Your affirmation can be anything that inspires and uplifts you, but keep it positive. Many spiritual traditions teach that words carry power, and modern psychology also recognises that the way we speak to ourselves shapes our thoughts and behaviours. Refrain from speaking about yourself in negative terms.

Instead of saying, “I hope things get better,” try saying:

This too shall pass. Pain is only temporary.

These small additions to your daily routine can enrich your life in ways you never thought possible.

Everything I have shared here comes from my own daily practice. These simple rituals helped me navigate some of the darkest periods of my own life, and I hope that, in time, they become a source of comfort and strength for you too.
